A warm welcome to you

Our traditional, family-run pub in Wendens Ambo, known for its relaxed, warm and inviting atmosphere, attracts a wide range of people, from guests looking to enjoy a home-cooked meal to those wanting a pint or a glass of wine after a long dog walk.

 

We're are just a two minute walk from Audley End Station, situated on the edge of the historic village of Wendens Ambo.

The pub has changed a bit over the years since the first reopening on its current site circa 1865. The original pub was located some 500 yards away by the Old Forge in Wendens Ambo and was demolished to make way for the railway. In those days we are told the pub was called “Ye cock in ye hole”

Since taking over in June 2014 we have made some changes of our own to improve the pub. The landlady – Tracey – and her daughters Laura and Marie are Coeliacs, as are 1 in 100 people in the UK.

  

Our pub motto is Great Beer, Great Food, Great Company, and we realised that there was a market to specialise in serving food to those with allergies. We also realised that if 1 in 100 are Coeliac – then 99 out of 100 are not – and as such we went about creating meals and an environment that allows us to cater to allergy sufferers and non-allergy sufferers alike, whilst serving great food that tasted exactly the same as it did with gluten in.

 

We have built our reputation as the number one place to eat around Saffron Walden. Currently, 85 per cent of our menu is gluten free, including traditional dishes such as fish & chips and desserts such as chocolate brownie and sticky toffee pudding. In fact, our gluten free food is so great we would challenge non-allergy sufferers to try and tell the difference!

 

Here at the Fighting Cocks we have a big future ahead with an extension planned by the end of 2018.

Everything is homemade and prepared on site daily and is cooked freshly to order. Our chefs even makes thier own ice cream! Our produce is sourced locally with meats from Burtons the Butchers and Priors Hall farm, vegetables from another local supplier and our Fish is sourced from a family business based in Stansted that own 36 fishing vessels, from samll boats line catching mackerel to 2 x £70m trawlers. So boat to block to table with full provenence.

 

Every Sunday we offer not only a full menu but a full home cooked Sunday roast, with options of beef, pork or lamb. Or why not do what many do and have the roast combo where you get all three meats!.

As the landlord and landlady of the pub, our goal is to ensure that you have a great time whenever you visit us. Come in and put us to the test, you will be sure of a very warm welcome!
